Ro-Ro Move in the Caspian

A critical new step has been taken in the Middle Corridor, which is set to become the backbone of trade between Türkiye, Central Asia and Europe. Under the leadership of the International Transporters’ Association (UND), a modern Ro-Ro transportation structure planned for the Caspian Sea is poised to fundamentally reshape regional logistics dynamics.

Ro-Ro Move in the Caspian: The Logistics Fate of the Middle Corridor Is Being Redefined

This strategic initiative, launched by UND in cooperation with partners in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, aims to transform the Caspian Sea from a logistical bottleneck into a competitive advantage. The project envisions the establishment of a sustainable, regular and high-capacity Ro-Ro line to address long waiting times, uncertainties and rising costs in road transportation.

The Middle Corridor Gains Strength

The new Ro-Ro structure will enable cargo departing from Türkiye to be transported more quickly and predictably along the Georgia–Azerbaijan–Caspian Sea–Kazakhstan–Central Asia route. As a result, the most secure alternative corridor for the Europe–Asia supply chain—bypassing Russia and Iran—will be further strengthened for both Turkish transport operators and international trade flows.

According to industry representatives, the Caspian Ro-Ro line will not only shorten transit times but also enhance access to Central Asian markets, significantly boosting the competitiveness of Turkish logistics companies.

A Sustainable and Institutional Framework

One of the most notable aspects of the project is its focus on creating an institutional and sustainable structure. With modern Ro-Ro vessels, digital tracking systems and scheduled sailings, the Caspian crossing is expected to be transformed from a “waiting point” into a reliable transit hub. This approach is also aligned with the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative and green logistics objectives.

A Strategic Turning Point for the Industry

Experts describe the Caspian Ro-Ro initiative as a strategic turning point for Türkiye’s transportation and logistics sector. Once implemented, the project is expected to deliver multiple benefits:

  • Shorter transit times along the Middle Corridor

  • Stronger integration between road and maritime transport

  • Increased presence of Turkish logistics companies in Central Asia

  • Growth in regional trade volumes

This new Ro-Ro structure to be established in the Caspian Sea is not merely a transportation project; it is widely seen as a geopolitical and strategic move that carries Türkiye’s logistics vision deep into Central Asia.
